El Cajon, California – A pedestrian was tragically killed in a hit-and-run collision early Sunday morning, August 17, 2025, but automated license plate reader (ALPR) technology swiftly led to the arrest of a suspected intoxicated driver. The incident occurred just before 1 a.m. near the intersection of Chase Avenue and Avocado Avenue, where a vehicle struck a fire hydrant, a power pole, and a pedestrian pushing a shopping cart before fleeing the scene.

According to El Cajon Police, emergency crews responded to reports of the collision and found an unidentified male deceased at the scene. The driver of the vehicle had left prior to police arrival, initiating a search for the suspect. Witnesses reported the vehicle involved had also caused significant infrastructure damage.

Investigators quickly utilized the city's extensive network of ALPRs, which are strategically placed throughout East San Diego County. This technology rapidly identified a white GMC SUV seen in the vicinity immediately after the crash. The suspect vehicle was subsequently located unoccupied in the 500 block of Sandalwood Drive, displaying damage consistent with the collision and a deployed airbag.

Officers contacted an adult male at an associated residence who exhibited signs of intoxication and admitted to being the driver involved in the fatal incident, police stated. He was taken into custody without further incident. The rapid identification and apprehension underscore the effectiveness of El Cajon's investment in ALPR technology.

The El Cajon Police Department has lauded its ALPR system, implemented in partnership with Flock Safety, for its significant impact on crime reduction. Within 18 months of its launch, the system has contributed to over 170 arrests, the recovery of more than 130 stolen vehicles valued at over $1.2 million, and the resolution of three homicide cases. The technology provides real-time alerts, proving to be an invaluable tool in deterring crime and assisting investigations.

El Cajon police are urging anyone with additional information regarding the collision to contact them at (619) 579-3311. The investigation into the fatal hit-and-run is ongoing.
