APD had issued a "Shelter in Place" alert around 5:30 a.m. for residents in the Barton Hills community as police searched for the suspect. However, approximately 50 minutes later, this alert was prematurely downgraded to an "Avoid the Area" notice. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis acknowledged the critical error, stating, "I have serious concerns about why that happened... That never should have been changed."
