Washington D.C. – U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy has launched a new initiative aimed at restoring civility and courtesy to air travel, dubbed the "Golden Age of Travel" campaign. The campaign, which encourages passengers to adopt more respectful behaviors, recently highlighted the insights of Lily, a United Airlines flight attendant with 19 years of experience. Secretary Duffy shared Lily's tips on social media, stating, "Lily has been a flight attendant with @united for 19 proud years and has seen it all! She has unique insight on returning to the GOLDEN AGE of TRAVEL… starting with some tips to know before you fly."
The Department of Transportation's campaign seeks to "jumpstart a nationwide conversation" on enhancing the air travel experience through improved passenger conduct. Key suggestions from the initiative include dressing "with respect," showing gratitude to airline staff, and maintaining control of children in airports. Secretary Duffy, who assumed his role in January 2025 and also serves as acting NASA Administrator, has emphasized that civility is a shared responsibility for all travelers.
The campaign comes amidst a backdrop of increased unruly passenger incidents in recent years, prompting a focus on passenger behavior. However, the Secretary's call for a return to decorum has also drawn criticism, particularly following his decision to withdraw a Biden-era rule that would have mandated airlines to financially compensate passengers for significant flight disruptions. Critics argue that while passenger conduct is important, airline accountability for delays and cancellations also plays a significant role in the overall travel experience.
Despite the debate, the Department of Transportation maintains that fostering a more respectful environment benefits everyone. The initiative aims to remind travelers that simple acts of kindness and consideration can significantly improve the journey for fellow passengers and airline crew alike. As the busy holiday travel season approaches, the campaign underscores the importance of mutual respect in crowded travel settings.
