San Francisco, CA – A student was shot and wounded at Phillip and Sala Burton Academic High School on Tuesday, December 2, leading to an immediate campus lockdown and a rapid police response. The victim, who sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, is reported to be in stable condition, and authorities have since apprehended a juvenile suspect in connection with the incident. News of the shooting prompted officials to provide live updates, as reported by ABC7 News.
The incident occurred around 12:13 p.m. at the school, located on Mansell Street in the city's Portola District. Officers arrived to find the injured student, who was then transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive, San Francisco police confirmed. Students described a chaotic scene as "kids were starting to go to lunch and then the cops started pulling up," leading to teachers screaming and panicking, as one student recounted.
The alleged shooter fled the scene but was later located and taken into custody in the 1400 block of Shafter Avenue in the Bayview District, with a firearm also recovered. Captain Bernadette Robinson of the SFPD Bayview station thanked officers for their quick work and assured the public that "this was an isolated incident." The school was placed on lockdown for approximately an hour following the report.
San Francisco Supervisor Jackie Fielder, whose district includes the Portola neighborhood, expressed gratitude for the rapid response of the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), Burton staff, and teachers. Fielder stated, "Every child deserves to feel safe at school," and decried the "senseless violence that disrupts any student's wellbeing." The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) Superintendent Maria Su confirmed that classes continued after the shooting, noting that staff followed protocols by securing the perimeter and notifying families.
Despite the traumatic event, Superintendent Su praised students for "remaining calm" and confirmed that additional wellness support was made available to students. While the SFUSD has not confirmed if the suspect is a student at the school, the incident has highlighted school safety concerns. The swift resolution by law enforcement has been a point of reassurance for officials and the community.
