The "Sunflower Cabin Community," a homeless housing project in Tarzana, is slated for demobilization by the end of 2026, with City Councilman Bob Blumenfield citing operational challenges and community impact. The closure follows concerns from local residents and businesses, including the nearby Red Barn feed store, which recently ceased operations, attributing its departure to increased crime and drug activity.
Councilman Blumenfield announced the "Demobilization of Tarzana Cabin Community" on October 24, acknowledging that the site "had its share of issues." He noted that "some clients were caught in drug offenses and petty theft," and the community experienced a lower transition rate to permanent housing compared to other similar projects. Regulatory hurdles requiring significant taxpayer investment for infrastructure changes and state and federal "Housing First" rules, which prevent the establishment of sober sites, were also cited as reasons for the closure.
The impact on the local business community was significant. Theresa's Country Feed/Red Barn, a long-standing Tarzana establishment located adjacent to the cabin community, closed its doors on October 6. The owner stated in a September 8 Facebook post that "criminal, drug and homeless activity in the area—including break-ins and threats to both employees and customers—has taken a serious psychological, physical, and financial toll." The store ultimately accepted an offer from Metro to be released from its lease.
The land, owned by the county transportation agency Metro, is now poised for new development. Following the signing of Senate Bill 79 by Governor Gavin Newsom in October, Metro is authorized to construct high-rise residential and commercial buildings on its properties. This development aligns with the long-term, temporary nature of the cabin community, which was established in July 2021 with the non-profit Hope the Mission to provide transitional housing for 74 individuals. Current residents are expected to be transitioned to other housing and services, ensuring they are not forced back onto the streets.
