Annapolis, Maryland – The U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis experienced a security lockdown on September 12, 2025, after reports of an active shooter circulated, initially leading to claims of multiple victims. While a tweet from Nick Sortor described a "BREAKING UPDATE" confirming "MULTIPLE VICTIMS" and one in "life-threatening condition" airlifted to a hospital, official statements later clarified the situation as a hoax.
"MULTIPLE VICTIMS confirmed after a gunman opened fire at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland," Nick Sortor stated in a social media post. "At least one is in life-threatening condition, being airlifted to a hospital right now. Keep these men and women in your prayers 🙏🏻"
Despite initial reports and social media claims, authorities, including Naval Support Activity Annapolis (NSAA) and local law enforcement, confirmed there was "no active shooter threat." The lockdown was initiated "out of an abundance of caution" following anonymous threats made on a chat platform, which were later traced to a former midshipman who was not on campus. One midshipman was injured during the incident, reportedly after mistaking a law enforcement officer for a threat and striking them with a parade rifle, leading to the officer firing their weapon and wounding the midshipman in the arm. Both individuals are in stable condition.
The incident occurred amid heightened tensions and a series of false reports at college campuses nationwide, following the assassination of a conservative activist at a Utah university. The Naval Academy had previously tightened security measures earlier in 2025, including restricting public access and suspending its "Trusted Traveler" program, in response to various security concerns.
Military installations regularly conduct active shooter drills and maintain robust emergency response protocols, emphasizing inter-agency coordination. The Naval Academy has been closed to the public for further investigation. Officials continue to warn against the spread of misinformation during such events.
