Washington, D.C. – FBI Director Kash Patel has publicly clarified the role of approximately 274 FBI agents present at the U.S. Capitol during the January 6, 2021, events, directly addressing former President Donald Trump's recent assertions. Patel stated that these agents were deployed for "crowd control" after the riot was declared, a mission he indicated went against established FBI standards due to failures in previous leadership. His remarks, made to Fox News Digital, aim to provide transparency regarding the bureau's involvement.
The clarification comes after Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, claiming that "it was just revealed that the FBI had secretly placed, against all Rules, Regulations, Protocols, and Standards, 274 FBI Agents into the Crowd just prior to, and during, the January 6th Hoax." Trump further speculated that these agents were "probably acting as Agitators and Insurrectionists." He called for an investigation into "Dirty Cops and Crooked Politicians."
Patel, however, did not support the claim that agents acted as agitators. "Agents were sent into a crowd control mission after the riot was declared by Metro Police – something that goes against FBI standards," Patel told Fox News Digital. He attributed this situation to "the failure of a corrupt leadership that lied to Congress and to the American people about what really happened," implicitly criticizing former FBI Director Christopher Wray for lack of disclosure.
Further context from a Department of Justice Inspector General report revealed that while hundreds of FBI personnel were present, primarily for crowd control assistance requested by Capitol Police, there was no evidence of undercover employees inciting violence. The report also noted the presence of 26 confidential informants, most of whom were not tasked by the bureau to be there and none were instructed to instigate unlawful acts. Officials have distinguished between plainclothes agents responding to an emergency and undercover operatives.
Patel emphasized the FBI's commitment to transparency and accountability, stating, "Thanks to agents coming forward, we are now uncovering the truth. We are fully committed to transparency, and justice and accountability continues with this FBI." The ongoing discourse highlights persistent questions surrounding the events of January 6th and the federal government's role.
