Jerusalem – David Barnea, the head of Israel's Mossad intelligence agency, recently asserted that Israel possesses "undeployed secret capabilities" deep within Tehran, enabling continuous surveillance of Iran. Barnea's remarks, made during a Prime Minister's Award ceremony, underscored the agency's enhanced strength and creativity in monitoring the Islamic Republic. He explicitly warned Iran that it remains under constant observation.
"Israel retains capabilities inside Tehran, Mossad chief says," reported Iran International on September 18, 2025.
Barnea's statements come amidst heightened tensions and follow "Operation Rising Lion," a significant Israeli offensive against Iranian nuclear and military targets in June 2025. During the operation, Israel claimed to have inflicted substantial damage on Iran's nuclear program and military infrastructure. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded the operation, stating it was "one of the greatest military operations in history" and that Israel had "destroyed the Natanz plant."
The Mossad played a crucial role in this offensive, with reports indicating the agency established a secret drone base inside Iran and smuggled precision weaponry to neutralize air defenses. An Israeli security official highlighted the "groundbreaking thinking" and "surgical operation of advanced technologies" that allowed agents to operate "in the heart of Iran while totally evading the eyes of local intelligence." This covert action reportedly included deploying precision missiles near anti-aircraft sites and activating drones to strike surface-to-surface missile launchers aimed at Israel.
Iranian officials, however, have largely downplayed the extent of the damage. While acknowledging some impact, they have claimed that nuclear sites like Fordo and Isfahan sustained "limited damage." Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed a "severe punishment" for Israel's actions, and the newly appointed commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Mohammad Pakpour, threatened to open "the gates of hell" in retaliation. The ongoing exchange of threats and claims reflects the deeply entrenched conflict between the two nations, with Israel determined to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
