North Yorkshire Police Under Fire for Social Media Arrest Amidst Rising Crime and Misconduct Concerns

North Yorkshire Police, under the leadership of Chief Constable Tim Forber since April 1, 2024, is facing intense scrutiny following the arrest of an individual for a social media post, an incident that has ignited debate over policing priorities and freedom of expression. The individual, identified as "@FUDdaily," was reportedly detained for five hours after posting a meme that read, "Fck Palestine. Fck Hamas. F*ck Islam." The investigation is proceeding under Section 19 of the Public Order Act 1986, which addresses stirring up racial hatred and carries a maximum sentence of seven years imprisonment.

The arrest has drawn criticism, with observers questioning the allocation of police resources given the force's recent crime statistics. As highlighted in a social media post, North Yorkshire Police has seen an 8.1% increase in anti-social behaviour, a 7.6% rise in shoplifting, and a 5.6% increase in drugs crime over the past year. Critics argue that focusing on online speech, while these "material crimes" surge, represents a misplacement of priorities.

Further compounding the force's challenges is a January 2025 integrity report from His Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS). The report, as quoted in the tweet, found that "The force doesn’t always investigate complaints and misconduct thoroughly and proportionately. And its management of investigations falls short of the standards required. Investigators didn’t follow all lines of enquiry in some cases."
