NEW YORK, NY – September 17, 2025 – New York City is experiencing a notable decline in gun violence and overall major crimes, with officials reporting a significant 14% decrease in shooting incidents citywide. This positive trend marks eight consecutive months of overall crime reduction, according to Mayor Eric Adams' annual management report released today.
The report highlights substantial drops across several major felony categories for the 2025 fiscal year. Murders have fallen by 6%, robberies by 17%, and felonious assaults by 9%. Additionally, grand larceny and grand larceny auto both saw a 10% decrease. Public spaces are also safer, with park crime down 12%, transit system crime down 2%, and a 9% reduction in major felonies at schools.
The data presented by the city contrasts with some social media observations. Earlier today, Reza Chowdhury, Founder & CEO of AlleyWatch, posted on X (formerly Twitter): > "ANOTHER MOSTLY PEACEFUL SHOOTING IN MANHATTAN; AT LEAST THE SECOND OF THE DAY. There was a period of time not that long ago where we would go weeks and months without a single shooting in the borough. However, that was when we had a functional criminal justice system."
Despite such individual claims, official figures indicate a different reality. Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch had previously announced in May 2025 that New York City recorded the lowest number of shootings and murders in recorded history for the first five months of the year. This included the safest Memorial Day on record, with zero shootings on Memorial Day Sunday. Mayor Adams emphasized the effectiveness of his administration's public safety strategy, stating, "Our administration is, once again, showing how our competent management is delivering real results for all New Yorkers." He further added, "This is what it looks like to have a real public-safety strategy and drive down crime."
The NYPD attributes these reductions to a commitment to seizing illegal firearms and the ongoing Summer Violence Reduction Plan, which deployed over 1,500 uniformed officers to high-priority areas. So far in 2025, more than 2,265 illegal guns have been removed from the streets, contributing to an overall total of 22,027 since the start of the Adams administration in January 2022. While the overall trend is positive, a troubling increase in rape cases this year is noted, attributed in part to a change in how these crimes are classified. NYPD response times to critical crimes have also improved by 14 seconds.
