Masad Boulos, a senior adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump for African and Arab affairs, has strongly condemned the atrocities committed by both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan, urging a comprehensive investigation and accountability for all responsible parties. His statements come amidst a protracted civil war that has displaced over 12 million people and led to a severe humanitarian crisis.

The conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has seen widespread accusations of war crimes against both the SAF and the RSF. Recent reports from international organizations and NGOs detail mass killings, ethnic cleansing, and sexual violence, particularly following the RSF's capture of El Fasher. Amnesty International recently warned of war crimes committed by RSF fighters in the region, while the UN Human Rights Council has cited an "overwhelming volume" of evidence regarding sexual violence.

Boulos, part of a "Quad" mediation group that includes Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, has been actively involved in presenting ceasefire proposals. He recently presented a "comprehensive" ceasefire plan to the warring generals, though neither side has formally accepted it. The US envoy emphasized the urgent need for a three-month humanitarian truce to address the dire situation.

Sudan's army chief, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has rejected recent peace proposals, describing them as "the worst" and accusing the UAE of bias towards the RSF. Conversely, the RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), has declared unilateral ceasefires, which some analysts view as political maneuvers. Despite these declarations, fighting continues, with the army reporting RSF attacks even after such announcements.

The ongoing violence has plunged Sudan into what the UN has called the world's worst humanitarian crisis. President Trump himself recently stated on Truth Social that "tremendous atrocities" are occurring, describing Sudan as "the most violent place on Earth" and the "single biggest Humanitarian Crisis." Boulos reiterated the call for external financial and military support to the warring parties to cease, emphasizing that protecting civilians and ensuring aid delivery are primary concerns.
