New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani's long-standing advocacy for the decriminalization of sex work has become a significant point of debate in the ongoing election, drawing sharp criticism from opponents and prompting clarification from his campaign. A recent social media post from "SCOOCH דוד" highlighted that Mamdani "wants to legalize prostitution in NYC," underscoring a contentious policy discussion. This issue is now central to the mayoral race, with differing views on its potential impact on the city.
As a Queens Assemblyman, Mamdani has consistently supported and co-sponsored legislation aimed at decriminalizing sex work across New York State. Notably, he is a proponent of "Cecilia's Act" (Assembly Bill A3251), which seeks to decriminalize both the selling and buying of sex, as well as the promotion of prostitution. His past statements, including one from May 2020 on the campaign trail, emphasized, "Not only must we decriminalize sex work, we need a comprehensive platform of justice for all."
However, this stance has met strong opposition from current Mayor Eric Adams and various advocacy groups. Mayor Adams has publicly rebuked Mamdani's position, stating, "I don’t know where in his Quran it states that it’s okay for a woman to be on the streets selling their body." Sonia Ossorio, Executive Director of the National Organization for Women NYC, warned that such decriminalization could transform New York City into a "sex tourism destination," leading to increased human trafficking, organized crime, and exploitation of vulnerable individuals.
In response to the mounting scrutiny, Mamdani's campaign has clarified his current priorities. A spokesperson stated that while he has previously supported decriminalization, it is not planned as a legislative priority if he is elected mayor. Instead, his platform emphasizes a commitment to genuine public safety and combating sex trafficking, proposing a significant $40 million investment through his Department of Community Safety towards victim services.
The debate also encompasses broader implications, with critics pointing to studies from regions where sex work has been legalized or decriminalized, suggesting an increase in related crimes and exploitation. Conversely, proponents argue that decriminalization can reduce violence against sex workers by bringing the industry out of the shadows. As the mayoral election approaches, Mamdani's past advocacy and current campaign focus on victim services continue to shape public discourse on this complex issue.
