The incident occurred on Ettrick Street in the Chabot Park area, with an autopsy pending to determine the official cause of death. Martin, known for his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders, became unresponsive after being detained.

Doug Martin, nicknamed "Muscle Hamster" for his powerful running style, was a standout player drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He achieved Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro honors in his rookie season, rushing for 1,454 yards. He had another 1,400-yard season in 2015 before joining the Oakland Raiders for his final NFL season in 2018.
