Philadelphia, PA \u2013 New research from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania indicates that artificial intelligence significantly enhances the productivity and quality of knowledge work. A working paper titled "Navigating the Jagged Technological Frontier: Field Experimental Evidence of the Effects of AI on Knowledge Worker Productivity and Quality," co-authored by Ethan Mollick, a distinguished scholar at Wharton, reveals substantial gains for consultants utilizing AI.
The study, conducted with 758 consultants from a global management consulting firm, found that individuals using AI completed 12.2% more tasks on average and finished tasks 25.1% more quickly. Furthermore, the quality of their output improved by over 40% compared to a control group without AI access. These findings suggest AI's profound potential to revolutionize knowledge-intensive tasks.
Mollick and his co-authors highlight the concept of a "jagged technological frontier," where AI excels at certain tasks while others, seemingly similar, remain beyond its current capabilities. The research noted that consultants across all skill levels benefited from AI augmentation, with those below average performance seeing a 43% improvement and top performers gaining 17%. However, for tasks outside AI's frontier, AI users were 19 percentage points less likely to produce correct solutions.
Separate but complementary research, "The Cybernetic Teammate," also co-authored by Mollick, explored AI's role in teamwork. This field experiment with 776 professionals at Procter & Gamble demonstrated that individuals using AI could match the performance of human teams without AI, suggesting AI can replicate aspects of human collaboration and break down functional silos by encouraging balanced solutions.
