Most of the folks building AI have not lived long enough to structure insights into life learned wisdom." He emphasized a critical oversight: "They unfortunately believe 'technology solves all problems'. Yet they do not see the problems technology creates.
Roemmele, a long-time technologist, argues that this perceived arrogance stems from a narrow view that prioritizes technological advancement over profound societal understanding. He fears that without integrating true wisdom, the rapid pace of AI development will lead to "massive amounts of damages" within two decades. This concern is rooted in the belief that many developers overlook the inherent problems technology can introduce, focusing solely on its perceived solutions.
A core tenet of Roemmele's critique is the "poisoned well" theory, where AI models are trained on vast quantities of "internet sewage"—toxic and unrepresentative online data. He contends that this training, often based on a mere "1% of the human experience," skews AI systems towards the "basest, most toxic elements of human expression," leading to biased and pessimistic outputs. Efforts to "align" AI are dismissed as "bandaids on a festering wound" if the foundational data remains corrupted.
The technologist particularly highlights the danger of "centrally controlled robots," suggesting that AI integrated into physical forms could amplify these negative consequences. His analysis indicates that such systems, if compromised or misaligned due to flawed training, could be leveraged by "bad actors and 'well-intentioned' governments" to disrupt critical infrastructure or even pose physical threats. This project aims to preserve human wisdom through a structured questionnaire, enabling individuals to create "personal AI" that is owned and controlled by the user, offering a decentralized alternative to corporate-controlled AI systems. He stresses the urgency of collecting and integrating genuine human insight to counteract the current trajectory of AI development.
