Boom Supersonic is significantly scaling up its production capabilities, announcing plans to double its machine shop footprint and triple its manufacturing team. Blake Scholl, CEO of Boom Supersonic, confirmed the expansion, stating, "We're doubling the Boom machine shop and 3X'ing our mfg team." This strategic move is aimed at accelerating the development and production of the company's Overture supersonic airliner.
The expansion comes as Boom Supersonic progresses with its Overture program, which includes the recently completed Overture Superfactory in Greensboro, North Carolina. This facility, the first supersonic airliner factory in the United States, celebrated its construction completion in June 2024. The Superfactory is designed to produce up to 33 Overture aircraft annually on its first assembly line, with plans to expand to 66 aircraft per year.
Scholl characterized the new roles as a "dream job for machinists," highlighting access to "the latest machines, great coworkers, working in person with engineers in a co that respects manufacturing." He also candidly noted the demanding nature of the work, adding, "We offer long hours, challenging work—plus glory and stock options." Current job postings for machinists in Centennial, Colorado, show base pay ranges from $40.00 to $50.00 per hour, emphasizing precision component manufacturing for advanced aerospace systems.
The Overture, designed to fly at Mach 1.7, is intended to operate on up to 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This manufacturing ramp-up follows significant milestones, including the successful supersonic flight tests of the XB-1 demonstrator aircraft in early 2025. The company has secured orders and commitments from major airlines like United Airlines, American Airlines, and Japan Airlines, underscoring market confidence in the return of commercial supersonic travel.
Boom Supersonic aims to begin Overture production in 2024, with the first aircraft projected to roll out in 2026 and entry into service targeted for 2029. The expanded machine shop and increased workforce are crucial steps in meeting these ambitious timelines and delivering on the promise of a new era in supersonic aviation.
