Google's annual Made by Google hardware event showcased significant advancements for its audio devices, with the Google Gemini AI taking center stage in the new Pixel Buds 2a and the updated Pixel Buds Pro 2. The announcement, highlighted by TechCrunch in a tweet stating, "Google Gemini was the star yet again at this year's hardware event, bringing new features to the 2nd gen Pixel Buds A-Series and Pro 2," underscores Google's commitment to integrating advanced artificial intelligence across its ecosystem. The event, held on August 20, 2025, in New York, emphasized a proactive and personalized user experience driven by AI.

The Pixel Buds 2a, the second generation of Google's more affordable A-Series earbuds, received substantial upgrades. For the first time in this line, they now feature Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and Transparency Mode, allowing users to block out distractions or stay aware of their surroundings. Powered by Google's Tensor A1 chip, the Buds 2a offer hands-free Gemini support, enabling users to access the AI assistant for tasks like navigation or music control without reaching for their phone. These new earbuds are priced at $130 and boast improved battery life, offering seven hours with ANC on and 20 hours with the charging case.

Existing Pixel Buds Pro 2 owners will also benefit from a major software update rolling out in September. This update introduces innovative gesture controls, allowing users to accept calls with a nod or decline them with a head shake. Enhanced Gemini integration means improved performance in noisy environments, along with Adaptive Audio, which automatically adjusts sound levels based on ambient noise, and Loud Noise Protection to safeguard hearing from sudden loud sounds. The Pixel Buds Pro 2 retail for $229 and are now available in a new Moonstone color.

The integration of Gemini AI across both earbud models signifies Google's broader strategy to embed intelligent features directly into its hardware. The Made by Google 2025 event also saw the unveiling of the Pixel 10 series phones and the Pixel Watch 4, all featuring deeper Gemini capabilities, from AI-powered photo editing to a new AI health coach in Fitbit. This comprehensive AI push aims to make devices more intuitive and responsive to user needs, solidifying Gemini's role as a core component of the Pixel experience. The Pixel Buds 2a are available for pre-order and will ship on October 9, while the updated Pixel Buds Pro 2 shipped on August 28.
