Instagram, the Meta-owned social media platform, is currently developing an internal prototype feature named "Picks" designed to foster deeper connections among users through shared interests. The feature aims to allow individuals to select their favorite movies, books, TV shows, games, and music, subsequently identifying overlaps with their friends' selections. This initiative was first brought to light by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi and later confirmed by Instagram to TechCrunch.
The "Picks" feature aligns with Instagram head Adam Mosseri's strategic vision for 2025, which emphasizes enhancing creativity and connection on the platform. Mosseri previously stated that the company intends to "double down on messaging, make consuming content more interactive and social, and explore new ways to connect with friends." This new tool is expected to facilitate more personal interactions and spark conversations based on mutual hobbies and cultural preferences.
Screenshots shared by Paluzzi illustrate a system where users browse various categories to input their top favorites. Instagram would then cross-reference these choices with those of their friends, highlighting common interests. While the company has not disclosed specific details or a timeline, the concept suggests a move towards a more engaging and personalized social experience.
However, the introduction of "Picks" comes amid ongoing discussions regarding feature saturation within the Instagram application. Some users have expressed frustration over the app becoming increasingly crowded, particularly following the recent launch of features like Instagram Map, which received mixed reactions. As an internal prototype, there is no guarantee that "Picks" will ultimately be rolled out to the public.
