Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI and co-founder of DeepMind, recently articulated a critical condition for the future of advanced artificial intelligence, stating, > "Superintelligence could be the best invention ever – but only if it puts the interests of humans above everything else." This pronouncement, shared on social media, underscores the growing imperative for ethical development and human-centric design as AI capabilities rapidly advance.

Suleyman's perspective highlights the dual potential of superintelligent AI, recognizing its capacity for profound positive impact while emphasizing the necessity of robust safeguards. His call for human interests to be paramount aligns with themes explored in his book, "The Coming Wave," which examines the societal implications of emerging technologies and the urgent need for responsible governance.

In response to these challenges, Suleyman has announced the formation of the MAI Superintelligence Team within Microsoft AI, which he leads. This team is dedicated to developing what he terms "Humanist Superintelligence" (HSI), defining it as "incredibly advanced AI capabilities that always work for, in service of, people and humanity more generally." This approach aims for AI that is problem-oriented, carefully calibrated, and operates within defined limits, rather than an unbounded, autonomous entity.

Suleyman has cautioned against pursuing artificial superintelligence (ASI) without sufficient containment and alignment, describing it as an "anti-goal." He has expressed concerns that an unaligned superintelligence would be "very hard to contain" or align with human values, a sentiment that contrasts with some industry leaders who predict superintelligence could emerge within the decade.

The MAI Superintelligence Team is focusing on practical applications of HSI, including medical superintelligence for advanced diagnostics, AI companions designed to support human well-being, and leveraging AI for breakthroughs in clean energy. This strategic direction aims to deliver tangible benefits while ensuring AI remains a tool that serves and enhances human life, rather than posing existential risks.
