New Delhi – OpenAI has announced the establishment of its first office in India, located in New Delhi, a strategic move following a significant fourfold increase in ChatGPT users in the country over the past year. This expansion positions India as OpenAI's second-largest market by user base, underscoring its growing importance in the global AI landscape. The announcement, widely reported around August 22-23, 2025, follows a period of rapid adoption and investment by the AI giant in the region.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated, "AI adoption in India has been amazing to watch—ChatGPT users grew 4x in the past year—and we are excited to invest much more in India!" This commitment is further solidified by the company's plans to hire a dedicated local team, focusing on strengthening relationships with partners, government, businesses, and academic institutions across the nation. The company aims to tailor its products for the local audience and develop India-specific features.

Accompanying the office opening, OpenAI introduced "ChatGPT Go," an affordable plan priced at ₹399 per month (approximately $4.75), designed to increase accessibility and provide higher usage limits for Indian users. This plan offers access to advanced features, including GPT-5, image generation, file uploads, and advanced data analysis, marking a concerted effort to cater to the price-sensitive market. The move follows similar strategic partnerships by competitors aiming to tap into India's vast digital consumer base.

The company also announced upcoming initiatives, including its first Education Summit in India this month and a Developer Day later in the year, to engage with the country's vibrant tech community. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed OpenAI's presence, emphasizing India's "IndiaAI Mission" and its potential to become a global AI leader. This expansion aligns with OpenAI's broader strategy, which recently saw the general availability of its advanced GPT-5 model, further enhancing its offerings across various applications.
