OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the launch of "Pulse," a new feature for ChatGPT designed to transform the AI from a reactive chatbot into a proactive and highly personalized digital assistant. Initially available to Pro subscribers, Pulse works overnight to curate tailored updates based on user interests, connected data, and recent conversations, delivering a custom set of insights each morning. Altman described Pulse as his "favorite feature of ChatGPT so far," highlighting its potential to redefine user interaction with AI.

The new feature aims to provide users with relevant information without explicit prompts. "Pulse works for you overnight, and keeps thinking about your interests, your connected data, your recent chats, and more," Altman stated in his announcement. He added that casual mentions in chat, such as travel aspirations or family milestones, can help the system generate more useful updates.

Pulse represents a significant shift towards a more anticipatory AI experience. "This also points to what I believe is the future of ChatGPT: a shift from being all reactive to being significantly proactive, and extremely personalized," Altman explained. This proactive approach allows ChatGPT to function more like a "super-competent personal assistant" that anticipates user needs rather than merely responding to direct queries.

Users can enhance Pulse's effectiveness by providing preferences and connecting optional services like Gmail and Google Calendar. This integration allows the AI to offer context-specific suggestions, such as drafting meeting agendas or recommending restaurants for upcoming trips. While all updates undergo safety checks, OpenAI acknowledges that Pulse is in its early stages and may occasionally provide irrelevant suggestions, with quality improvements planned over time.

The feature is currently exclusive to ChatGPT Pro subscribers, who pay a premium for advanced access. OpenAI has indicated plans to expand availability to Plus subscribers in the future, as the system becomes more efficient. Altman extended "Huge congrats to @ChristinaHartW, @_samirism, and the team for building this," acknowledging the developers behind the innovative new tool.
