Yuga Cohler, a Senior Staff Software Engineer at Coinbase and former eight-year veteran at Google, revealed that the prevalence of political discussions at Google was a primary factor in his decision to join Coinbase in 2021. Cohler, known on social media as yuga.eth, stated, "This was a big reason I left Google for Coinbase in 2021." He contrasted the environments, noting, "At Google, it was impossible to get work done with the amount of (one-sided) political discussion going on."

Google has grappled with internal political debates and employee activism for several years, leading to policy changes aimed at curbing disruptive discussions. In 2019, the tech giant updated its community guidelines to restrict political speech, and by 2021, faced internal dissent over projects like "Project Nimbus," a cloud computing contract with the Israeli government. In stark contrast, Coinbase adopted a deliberate "apolitical" stance in September 2020, prior to Cohler's arrival. CEO Brian Armstrong outlined the company's commitment to being "mission-focused," concentrating solely on its goal of increasing "economic freedom" through cryptocurrency and avoiding social activism unrelated to this core mission. Armstrong positioned the workplace as a "refuge from division," a move that led to some employee departures but solidified the company's cultural direction.

Cohler's tweet underscores the appeal of Coinbase's focused environment, where, he observed, "everyone is laser focused on building technology to enable economic freedom." He explicitly endorsed this approach, adding, "No politics at work - it’s better that way." His background at Google included leading teams across Cloud and Search, and his current role at Coinbase involves web3 development, cryptoeconomics, and decentralized finance.
