Terraformation's Seed to Carbon Accelerator Secures First Major Carbon Credit Sale, Guides Restoration of 25,000 Hectares

Terraformation, a global native forest restoration company, is actively demonstrating that a better world can be planted, as encapsulated in its recent social media statement: "> We don’t need to imagine a better world. We can plant it." This vision is being realized through its Seed to Carbon Forest Accelerator, which recently announced its first carbon credit sale and has guided the restoration of nearly 25,000 hectares of biodiverse forests worldwide. The Accelerator is designed to overcome critical bottlenecks in large-scale ecological restoration, including funding, technology, and seed access.

The company, founded by former Reddit CEO Yishan Wong, focuses on restoring degraded land into thriving native ecosystems to capture carbon and combat climate change. Terraformation's approach emphasizes biodiverse reforestation, which is crucial for ecological resilience and long-term carbon sequestration. This involves providing comprehensive support, including seed banking solutions, advanced technology, and training for local forestry teams.

A significant milestone for the Accelerator is its partnership with Grosvenor’s UK property business, which resulted in the first sale of Verified Carbon Units (VCUs). This investment supports the Regenerative Development of Anlo Wetlands (ReDAW) project in Ghana, aiming to restore 1,536 hectares of mangroves. This initiative is projected to sequester 15,000 tCO2e by 2030 and over 1 million tCO2e by 2064, while also creating nearly 200 jobs and training 350 community members.

The Seed to Carbon Forest Accelerator has guided 14 native reforestation projects to date, with 12 more slated by the end of 2024, collectively supporting the restoration of approximately 25,000 hectares. Yishan Wong highlighted the program's unique impact, stating, "Our Accelerator combines the speed and scale that Silicon Valley is known for with forestry expertise to unlock access to funding and provide training, tech and seeds to start creating a forest before a single tree goes into the ground." These projects prioritize biodiversity and deliver tangible benefits to local communities, fostering sustainable livelihoods.
