Volkswagen ADMT, the autonomous mobility subsidiary of Volkswagen Group of America Inc., is set to collaborate with Uber Technologies, Inc. to launch a commercial robotaxi service in Los Angeles by late 2026. This strategic partnership aims to deploy a fleet of thousands of all-electric, fully autonomous ID. Buzz AD vehicles across multiple U.S. markets over the next decade. The announcement confirms and elaborates on earlier indications of the companies' joint venture in autonomous ride-hailing.

Testing of the ID. Buzz AD vehicles is anticipated to commence in late 2025, initially with human safety operators onboard. The transition to fully driverless operations is projected for 2027, following necessary regulatory approvals in California. Volkswagen ADMT, which publicly launched its autonomous vehicle test program in Austin in July 2023, is preparing to navigate the regulatory landscape for testing and commercial operation.

Christian Senger, CEO of Volkswagen Autonomous Mobility, emphasized the synergy of the collaboration, stating, "Volkswagen is not just a car manufacturer

we are shaping the future of mobility, and our collaboration with Uber accelerates that vision." He added that the partnership combines "high-volume manufacturing expertise with cutting-edge technology and a deep understanding of urban mobility needs."

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi highlighted the significance of the alliance, remarking, "This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the advancement of autonomous mobility, and highlights both Volkswagen’s and Uber’s shared dedication to building the future of transportation." Uber has adopted a partnership-first strategy for autonomous driving, integrating third-party autonomous systems into its ride-hailing network, with this being one of over 14 such agreements.

The ID. Buzz AD vehicles will integrate technology from Mobileye, Volkswagen ADMT's partner for autonomous driving platforms. MOIA, a Volkswagen AG brand, will provide its integrated solution for autonomous driving, encompassing the ID. Buzz AD vehicles and the software-based system for deployment on the Uber platform, including intelligent fleet control and operational software. This move signifies Volkswagen's shift towards offering self-driving vehicles and fleet management software to mobility service providers rather than operating its own ride-hailing service.
