San Francisco International Airport (SFO)'s Harvey Milk Terminal 1 has been recognized among the "World's Most Beautiful Airports" for 2025 by Prix Versailles, an annual award backed by UNESCO. The prestigious honor celebrates excellence in architectural and interior design, highlighting the terminal's blend of functionality, aesthetic appeal, ecological efficiency, and cultural storytelling. This global acknowledgment underscores the terminal's innovative design and its commitment to passenger experience.

The award validates SFO's vision for the terminal, which was designed to redefine the airport experience. Airport Director Mike Nakornkhet stated, "Harvey Milk Terminal 1 invites travelers into a space of calm, sustainability, artful expression, and reflection on civil rights pioneer Harvey Milk’s legacy." The terminal features museum-quality exhibits dedicated to Harvey Milk, integrating his enduring legacy into the travel environment.

The Harvey Milk Terminal 1 project, a multi-year endeavor, opened in four distinct phases, with the final phase completed in June 2024. This comprehensive redevelopment added 27 gates, enhanced ticketing and security areas, and created seamless post-security connections to the International Terminal. The phased approach ensured continuous operation while modernizing the facility.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the terminal has also achieved significant sustainability and well-being certifications. It is the first airport terminal globally to earn a full WELL Core Certification at the Platinum level, focusing on human health and well-being through improved air quality, lighting, and acoustic comfort. The terminal also holds LEED Platinum certification, underscoring its environmental performance.

The recognition has been met with pride by local figures, including Daniel Lurie, who stated in a recent tweet, "If you've ever flown from the Harvey Milk Terminal, you know SFO deserved a spot on this list. Proud to see @flySFO honored on the world stage." Jérôme Gouadain, Secretary General of Prix Versailles, emphasized that such infrastructure "must resolve formidable difficulties" while also standing as "works of art." The accolade positions Harvey Milk Terminal 1 as a global benchmark for airport design and passenger-centric facilities.
